Where do you put the toilet in a bathroom?

The positioning of your toilet should be a top priority when designing the layout of your bathroom fixtures.

6 considerations when determining the location of your toilet should be:

  1. Clearance: Ensure there is enough space around the toilet for comfortable use. This includes leaving sufficient clearance in front of the toilet for legroom and maneuverability for reaching the toilet roll, as well as adequate side clearance. Also consider clearance of the bathroom door and shower door (if applicable) and whether it causes any blockages during use.
  2. Plumbing connections: The location of the toilet should align with the existing or planned plumbing connections. Typically, the toilet needs to be positioned near the main waste pipe and have access to water supply lines. Account for extra costs and get a quote from a plumber if you wish to change the location significantly to another side of the bathroom.
  3. Privacy: Consider the privacy aspect when determining the placement of the toilet. It is common practice to position the toilet away from the main entrance or view of the bathroom, providing a level of privacy.
  4. Ventilation: Consider placing the toilet near a window or provide proper ventilation to eliminate odours and promote airflow in the bathroom.
  5. Design and aesthetics: The placement of the toilet should harmonize with the overall design and layout of the bathroom. Consider how it will interact with other fixtures, such as sinks, showers, or bathtubs, shower and bathroom doors and if it is in the path of the door swing to create a visually appealing and functional arrangement.
  6. Accessibility: If the bathroom needs to be accessible for individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges, consider placing the toilet in a location that allows for easy access and maneuverability for wheelchairs or walkers. Consider if you need to install additional assistive support rails on or next to the toilet for elderly or people with mobility difficulty.

It is recommended to consult with a professional bathroom designer and/or plumber who can assess your specific bathroom layout and provide guidance on the optimal placement of the toilet based on your preferences and any applicable building codes or regulations.
